Allyship Across Generations

What intergenerational collaboration really takes

Across movements and institutions, people report the same challenge: They want to work across generations, but age divides, assumptions, and power imbalances get in the way. CoGenerate set out to understand what allyship looks like when older, younger, and teen leaders are honest about what they need from one another.

We listened to the voices of 87 leaders ages 12 to 77, all eager to work across age divides. Each of our three reports centers the voices of the leaders themselves and translates their lived experience into clear guidance for collaboration.

“The phrase that always got thrown at me was, ‘You are the future, you’re going to solve all the problems in the world,’ and it really rubbed me the wrong way. Don’t put that all on my shoulders, it’s an unfair burden to say one generation is responsible for solving problems that existed before we were even born. I’ve learned to say thank you, but let’s build this thing together.”

“In order for me to pass the baton, we need to be clear that we are running the same race.”
